woman journalist robbed in Delhi metro
January 9th 2011 06:23
The first reported crime inside the Delhi metro has taken the authorities and the media fraternity by storm. It has not only exposed the weaknesses in the system created to provide protection for women but also showed how helpless and unprotected a woman can be when surrounded by other women.
Kulsum Talha a former staffer of the Indian Express Newspaper and the The Times of India was deprived of almost a lakh of rupees in the Delhi metro ladies compartment where she thought she would be very safe.
She then rushed to the authorities in the hope that she would recover her money. Then came shock and horror as she realized she had been let down by the very media blitz that women were safe in the ladies compartment. There was no CCTV camera inside the compartment and there was no plainclothes woman guard or police person inside the compartment. An ideal situation for a criminal to take advantage of. Somebody made a big booboo when planning safety for women. This is what she has to say.
I was travelling in the ladies compartment of metro in delhi on 6th Jan at
1.50 pm when my wallet which had about Rs 85,000(including 900 euroes) was
pick-pocketed. The matter has been reported to all senior officials of Metro
Rail and an FIR lodged at Kashmiri gate metro police station.
The fact that there are no safety measures in place in the all ladies
compartment including lack of cctv cameras\security guard is in itself a very
serious issue that must be looked into.Lack of information at the metro where to
lodge compalint\ callous behaviour of metro staff at the station are aspects
that should be dealt with by the media. I request the media faternity to take
this issue and highlight itfor the security of women travelling by metro . My
So what are the Metro people and the police gonna do now? Lets see.
