Wives beware on Valentine's day

February 7th 2009 01:48
Hangover, heartache and headache all on Valentines Day? Yes it’s possible especially now as the office wolf has become female. Valentines Day never a part of Indian culture and strongly opposed by the Shiv Sena, Bajrang Dal and the senior citizen has now even snooped into small town offices and parks, but in the big cities it is celebrated literally with a bang.
But what does the female office wolf have to do with Valentines Day? Well for one thing there is a pressing urgency to do something romantic on Valentines Day and since the office is always there and there are chances that there could be an office or outside office party there is the pressing need to do something romantic for the sake of Valentines Day itself. Quick relationships are now the need of the hour. Monday morning is another thing, you will have all the time to think about it later.

So not what is the female office wolf. Typically someone who has one foot in the US and one in India, unmarried or divorced and thirty plus. She seeks entertainment even if it is in the form of another woman’s husband and Valentines Day makes it easy for her. How does this work. Well for one it is possible to get close to someone during work, it is also possible to exploit the emotional turmoil and aura of romance that Valentines Day creates in the minds of the office male.
Take the case of Jyoti (name changed) who works in a publishing house. Late nights and tight deadlines are a part of the game for her. Separated from her last boyfriend she quit the US to work in India and became very close to a married man Sanjay. Now Sanjay has a wife who wears a sari and two children who go to school, his wife is a teacher and conservative. Jyoti smokes, drinks and is fun to be with, and she knows it. The office organises a party after work hours on Valentines Day. They dance and party hard and then Sanjay has to drop her home. Things get out of hand with the general ambience of the day, the events lead to eventually Jyoti leaving for the US and Sanjay heading for the family court. The hangover is over and the headache will last for a long time. Two broken homes.

Then there is Rina, who has the same profile. She meets Vipin who is her junior by 10 years and a fresher in the company. The sales job they do takes them out together often. On Valentines Day they decide to stop at a restaurant and a few drinks later they are both in the mood. After spending a few weekends in Vipin’s one room apartment their office comes to know of their relationship. Vipin is sacked and Rina leaves to pick up another job in another city. Another V Day for the female wolf.
Anusuya is from Kolkata and has just run away from a marriage she did not want in the city to work in a magazine in Delhi. She finds Jeevan in the same office. He lives near her house and can drop her home after work. Coming up to her flat for a cup of coffee becomes a habit and then on Valentines Day things get out of hand. There is nothing to really prevent them from getting married but Jeevan’s parents are vegetarian and she is not. The rift begins with that, initially they plan to live separately and get married then differences crop up regarding almost everything, from the colour of the curtains to the colour of the jeans. A few weeks later everything is over and one of them quits for another company.
Ria comes from Mumbai to Delhi where she meets Arun a small town boy from Meerut. They work in a call centre. She hides the fact that she is a divorcee and much older. After her affair with Arun is over, she moves on to another job. Its all in a Valentines Day’s work.
