2012

In 2012 the Mayan Calendar ends, but does that mean the world will end too? While the world will or will not end in 2012 there are sufficient indications to show that the world can end one day whether we like it or not unless we change the way we live and the way our economy runs. The engine of our economic growth is based on rabid exploitation of natural resources, transforming the environment from lush green fields and woods to roads and automobiles, from natural habitat to caves of concrete and here lies the key to the worlds eventual death.
It was Arthur C Clarke the famous Sci-Fi writer and later Isaac Asimov who wrote that the earth would die one day. The question is how will the world end in 2012?
Take the global warming scenario, the ice of the glaciers is melting at an alarming rate and humans can now do nothing to reverse this trend, the forces of nature have already taken control and are too vast for us to deal with at this stage. We are in short heading for the day of Kayamat or doomsday as prophesised in both the Holy Koran and the Holy Bible.
The melting ice will create two problems, one ocean levels will rise as there will be more water in the seas and they will become more turbulent, two space occupied the liquid water will be less than the space occupied by the frozen water as water in solid form expands. This will lead to rarefied atmospheric pressure in the polar regions disturbing the pattern of the winds.
At the same time large quantities of methane trapped in the ice will be released which will form a layer in the upper atmosphere trapping the suns rays and shooting up the temperature by promoting uncontrolled global warming.
In such a situation two things will happen. Firstly there will be tidal waves and ocean storms battering coastal areas and low lying countries, secondly there will be cold air rushing in from the upper reaches of the atmosphere. This will lead to unprecedented cooling or freezing, and temperatures could change from 20 degrees Celsius to Minus 100 degrees Celsius within minutes, even seconds. Such a phenomenon is believed to have taken place in Siberia 12,000 years ago when herds of woolly mammoths died within seconds; even the food in their mouths froze with them.
We take the Earth’s climate to be stable and the Earth to be a safe planet but our understanding of the Earth and how it runs is only a 1000 years old, our surveillance systems are only a few years old and we pride ourselves on our knowledge. Can anything be more stupid for when it comes to understanding how a 5 billion year old machine functions such knowledge is woefully limited. And why are we afraid of 2012. We die as individuals and this time maybe we will die collectively as a race, after death that really does not matter, or does it?
