Unification with India can save Pakistan

December 27th 2007 15:48
It has finally happened Benazir has been killed by the militants in Pakistan and this will embolden them to take action against political leaders with impunity. this operation carrie dout in LTTE fashion like the Sri Lankan Tamil extremeists and reminiscent of the manner in which Rajiv Gandhi was killed in India. Emboldened by this act the militants may carry out similar raids agains political leaders in poorly policed states of India like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar too.
The extremists want control of Pakistan but they will not get it so easily, there will be riots and vendetta in the wake of Benazirs death and there will be riots and arson and killings in such a heavily armed civilian population.

The only solution to terrorism lies in a confederacy between India and Pakistan or the reunification of India the way the two Germanys united. It is time we break the Berlin wall of caste and communal polotics that has separated the two countries. Only then will there be an end to the killing.

Thought it sounds like a good solution I think you are 60 too late.

The egg is scrambles and cannot be unscrambled.

I totally disagree with you Damo. I feel the time is ripe for the two halves of one great nation to reunite. The egg was never scrambled as you saw. I can uinderstand a conflict between people who do not share the same culture, language and skin colour. But here everything is the same. There is no justified cause for fighting and disagreement except to keep the shops of certain politicans open. Peace will only come to Asia when we forge a common identity the way Europe is doing it. The other alternative is learning the hard way through two wars like Europe did. Only these will be far more horrible than the world wars. The weapons will be far more destructive, the population far greater and there will be no Europeans and Africans fighting for Asians the way Asian troops fought for the great British Empire and for Montgomery's medals. We have lost enough because of this unnecessary strife. The day India and Pakistan merge will be a day when the destiny of Asia will change forever.

Mother India: Agree with Damo.

The 2 countries have gone their own way for 60 years and now have completely different personalities. Lets see some reasons why unification is impossible (at least for the next 20 years).

Pak is an Islamic republic and military ruled, India (largely) a secular democracy. In Pakistan, the army is no. 1, 2 and 3 while in India the army is under the command of President and the elected Parliament.

Even assuming that the common people want unification (which theyn dont) It is inconceivable that the Pak army will allow itself to become a servant of the state rather than playing God as it is used to doing in Pakistan.

I feel anon is wro ng. The army might be number one in Pakistan but Pakistan was not created by the people and they desperately want an end to the kind of misule they have been subjeceted to. Mutton costs Rs 300 per kg in Pak in India it is only Rs 140. Then take the case of Kashmir, the issue and the money spent on it will cease once the two reunite. Otherwise Pakistan will break up again. It will go separate ways with Punjab Sindh and Pakhtoonistan.

Yes yes you all are right, only anonymous is wrong, India and pakistan should never unite. If they did then they would stop spending 20 billion dollars a year ( more than 30 percent of their GDP) on fighting and become a world super power. That would be bad for the Weapon selling countries like US, UK, and much of europe. I mean its a different story that Europe where germans and French and British alsofought 2 world wars are now allowing unity in terms of trade and monetory union and visa regulations, but that is a different world on another planet. Not the same as in India and pakistan.
You dumb fools havent you got it yet? You are not India or Pakistani. You are a citizen of this world, and you have a God Given right to live and work anywhere on this world that God (if you believe in Him) put you on. Thats the right the Europeans enjoy, and so do the Americans.

Continue this scrambled egg business and watch a european breakfast being served.

Wake up before it is too late, Pakistan and India should stop being a slave to 'Your rope!!'

I wish both countries would wake up and smell the "european breakfast." Pakistan was created as an Islamic country yet there are more muslims in INdia??? Why the hell are there two lands for nothing? Let's unite and take on the world!

the reunification is only possible if India first invades Azad Kashmir, drive out the Pak army and flush out the terrorist and immediately bring about economic and social development and democracy and reunite it with Indian Kashmir. If this succeeds while Pakistan incrementally starts falling into Taliban control, India could force all the provinces to accede to the Indian Union and the Pak Army be restructured and merged with the Indian Army, weeding out all the anti India elements within it. It should then with International collabaration go all out to wipe out Taleban and Al Qaeda. With religious freedom many Pakistanis from the downtrodden and oppressed masses may leave their faith and either adopt new faiths or become agnostic/atheist/rationalists. This might happen if the civilian government in Pakistan as well as the Army is totally helpless and powerless to prevent the Talibanisation of the country. Bangladesh and Nepal are also inevitably heading towards reunification because of they would be better off than if they were on their own.

Let us see what benifit, the unification, brings to Pakistan. India is the regional economica "super power".

1. I do not think India want millions of musilms becoming part of Inda and indoctrinate them to become secular and respect other religion.
2. Indians have always advocated peaceful co-existance. But muslims do not.
3. Muslims want peace with voilence whereas Hindus want peace with non-violence.
4. Muslims in India want to fight for Mecca but not for India
5. Muslims do not tolerate any criticism on Islam. They are indoctrinated to think Islam is the best relegion regardless of other religion. Hindus tolerate every other relegion.
6. Moslims do not want democracy in Pakistan. Rather they are ruled by Dictators, Imams or Ayothollas.
7. Before the partition 18% of the Pakistan were Hindus now there are only 3% living are Hindus who are persecuted everyday.
8. Since 1945 not even one new temple was build in Pakistan. Ask how many Mosques are build in India. On average one Mosque every month.
9. India has problem feeding, educating and looking after 60% of its population. They do not want another 100 million Pakistanis to depend on Indian handouts.

So let the Pakistan live on its own and destroy itself by internal power politics and by Taliban and Americans. India will go on becoming more and more prosperous.

Hi,

I respect above persons opinions. But I strongly feel, Reunion will happen in future(may be in around next 30 to 40 years). It's not unification of India and Pakistan but unifications of other segments also. Pakistan, Bangladesh, Srilanka, Nepal, Bhutan & Maldives into a greater country called India. If Pakistan merges with India means, not losing of it's identity. it is like , if a river unites with Ocean, Here presnet India also a river ofcourse a big river...but all together form as a ocean.....a great Nation. The rebirth of this great nation again be a leader in all aspects, which has been it's birth right....as it has been for since 1000 B.C to almost till 16/17th century.

Hope all the citizens of these individual nations become again proud citizens of the reborn great nation.

Thanks,
Ur's Brother

Unification can only occur if it South Asian countries agreed a union that would ensure the ability of each party to maintain some level of autonomy and right to keep their identities. The alternative, becoming subordinate citizens within an unaltered and unaccommodating India would be inequitable and unviable. India has succeeded in becoming a secular democracy and creating a robust economy, but has some work to do to limit sectarian violence and tackle the subordination of Indian Muslims and Dalits. Don't get me wrong, Extremist religious elements within all communities need to be confronted but by vilifying the foundations of a faith we only alienate its devotees further. Unification is possible provided there are the right mix of circumstances and the emergence of charismatic leaders on all sides.

Nobody is subordinate in India, the largest Indian state has a dalit CM, the country has a minority community Sikh PM, there are special institutions and schemes for Muslims. So this argument is baseless, as for leadership it comes from the people in a democracy like India, Pakistan has to first find true democracy and vote a leader to power on the issue of development and welfare of the masses. Then they will negotiate with India for reunion. Otherwise as u knw the old bunkum will continue.
