Tata Car not small
February 11th 2008 17:31
The Tata Motors car Nano is anything but small. It may however be called cheap. The reason why I say this is that the Nano is nowhere near the cars poised to hit the market in 2009 in terms of fuel efficiency and even though the Nano carries four persons and these cars will be two seaters, they will be far more suited for Indian cities. These cars are however going to be made in the West and they are expected to meet astounding fuel efficiency norms.
The Nano cannot meet a fuel mileage of 300 miles per gallon or say 500 km in four litres of petrol, but the super small twin seaters of the west are targetting these levels of fuel efficiency.
These cars are inspired by aeroplanes and their bodies are designed like cocoons to house twin seater cockpits. Carmakers have also been told to meet certain goals in the west like producing the 100 mpg car or a car which shall travel almost 200 kim in four litres of petrol. Say an average of 50 km to a litre if it is used in India.
Can the Tatas of the Bajaj's make such cars? In a average Indian city where public transport is in a mess and against the mindset of the class conscience middle class Indian, these cars could greatly reduce the burden of importing oil in a poor country like India where the rich survive on loans and the poor feed on the margins of the country's debt burden and where academics feel that India is shining.

A picture would be nice... or a link to one.
What about the new car that runs on air, surely they will take the local and world markets by storm.
Lilla ...
PS It has been 15 years since I was in India (driving around in a Padmini and Maruti respectively) .. I cannot imagine the traffic on the roads today *slapping my forehead*
