the end of agriculture on land?

May 28th 2010 18:59
The end of agriculture

Creating a self replicating cell from four chemicals in a lab means the end of farming for humankind, its time to free up the farms for the tigers and the deer.

Around ten thousand years ago the growing demand for food turned hunter gatherers into farmers. The discovery of cereals put an end to hunger and farming communities became superrich civilizations, Egypt was one such example. Whenever the human race has reached a crisis point in its history it has reacted to food scarcity by changing its eating habits or sourcing its food differently.

Two million years ago a huge famine struck the savannah and turned peaceful vegetarian lumbering apes from roots nuts and berries to pork and venison. This change in diet led to a more advanced human form with smaller jaws, larger cranium and more brain capacity, better tool wielding abilities and killer instincts. The gentle apes became swift footed predators, but the seed of the human race survived.

Today most Americans unlike most Indians live off powders and not fibrous food fresh from the field which has to be processed at home. Mothers’ cooking is all but forgotten and people graze rather than dine. So are the Americans the future of the human race? Are they more advanced than Indians?

However the entire human race is about to embark on another culinary adventure and get to remain vegetarian too. Synthetic meat, beef and chicken will replace the real thing. Farming land will become a thing of the past and the flavor industry will have a whale of a time cooking up flavors’ and powders to be reconstituted in domestic microwaves. Food will now be grown in the lab and not in the fields. The new green revolution is about to begin.

Its time for Swaminathan to step aside and make way for the Isaac Asimov way of cooking. In the seventies Isaac Asimov predicted that one day the world’s entire food will be grown in chemical tanks and not farms. Space ships equipped with such tanks could produce their own fuel and food and atmosphere and go on generation long journeys in space. The future is here and we shall get to see it.

So free up the farms for the tigers and the deer, its time to eat kebabs made out of synthetic yeast flavored meat.
