Maids are routinely raped and sexually exploited in small town India and they don’t have the guts to complain because they know they won’t be heard, it is only now that they have started hitting back and striving for their rights in big metros. Workingwomen have always been sexually exploited and maids are the weakest among working women. They face sexual abuse, insult, in some cases confinement and even torture at the hands of their employers and even the police.
Even in so called glorified private sector jobs women are sexually abused and used by male superiors. While the most common industry where women are used and discarded is the modeling business, acting, the film industry and so on are worse. The hospitality and aviation industry see women facing the same situation. There have been numerous cases where bosses have exploited their young secretaries with promises of promotions, with threats of dismissal and so on. Such men prosper and could even be the man next door with the pretty wife whom you would like to call over for a drink or dinner. Such men have two personalities like Dr Jekyl and Mr Hide. They reserve their best behavior for society and their worst for the women they exploit ruthlessly.
In small town India maids, domestic servants wives, rag pickers etc are routinely raped and the victims do not even bother to go to the police to complain for fear that they may be raped by the cops too. The situation for them is untenable.
There have been incidents where the son of a PCS officer raped the domestic help and when she complained she was framed on a theft charge. In such a situation a domestic worker has no choice but to keep quiet and accept rape. One classic case in Lucknow was that when a Samajwadi Party Leader who has now joined the BSP was found disassociating himself from his nephew. The man Anna Shukla who faces 70 criminal cases was found doing this because his nephew was accused of gang raping a minor girl Zahira in a car along with his friends. The most sordid part of the entire incident was that Zahira was allegedly asked by a member of the woman’s commission – who was also an upper caste Brahmin like Shukla – to withdraw the charge and take some money instead.
There have been other incidents in small towns of UP where a university professor actually married his maid and left his first wife for her. But that is another story.
