Bengalis to blame for Mumbai riots
February 6th 2008 09:40
The state capital of Maharashtra burns say political observers. The truth is far different what we see in Mumbai today is what is happening all over the country. We feel everywhere that we are running out of food, clean water and clean air and if the infrastructure does not have to support people who come from outside in search of jobs then things would be far more comfortable.
Even as India prepares to add one billion more individuals to its population it seems that this hatred could spread to other centres as well and even other state capitals and even the national capital could experience such hatred.
The first state in India to start this kind of feeling was West Bengal with its sons of the soil theory. This was aimed at giving preference to Bengalis for jobs in Industry etc in Kolkata then Calcutta. It resulted in a backlash the Assam movement which drove out Bengalis from Assam and plush tea estate jobs.
It deprive Kolkata of its trade and prosperity. The communist government took care of the rest and unions led to industry winding up shop rather than employ unproductive labour.
Now with this backlash today in Mumbai we see the same sons of the soil theory and we see Biharis being targetted and people from North India who hold key posts there.
It had to happen what we see in Mumbai is the balkanisation of India and not just Mumbai.
