Congress poised for win in 2009 elections

December 29th 2008 04:38
The elections in J&K are a cry to the Indian voter to wake up for a hung Lok Sabha or giving power to any party which does not have an international vision like the Congress may spell doom for India in 2009. Regionalism, casteism and communalism will shatter the country under attack on several fronts

India will have to fight a war of attrition against terrorism, political instability and economic slowdown in 2009. 2009 will be an acid test for the Indian economy. In an election year when the fate of the Congress Party will be decide by the electorate the spectre of terrorism and economic slowdown will also haunt the Indian nation.

Suddenly everything has changed in India. A nation known for its unity and diversity has suddenly become more conscious of its unity and will strive to preserve this in 2009 feel political pundits.

In July 2008 it was felt that the India would continue to forge ahead in its pursuit of happiness, the earn and burn generation would continue to live it up despite rising prises and the economy would continue to boom, India would sing its way through Indian Idol and laughter shows into 2009. There would be unrestrained growth. For once in all truth India was shining.

Everything was just right. A new star was emerging on the political horizon and 2009 was poised to be the year of Rahul Gandhi of the Congress Party as old man Atal Bihari Vajpayee took a back seat in politics. Rahul was becoming conscious that he needed more interaction with the public, more grassroots links and more public meetings. His meeting in Allahabad was a big success. Then came the war on India.

It began with serial blasts in Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Delhi which dampened Diwali spirits, tapping down festive buying even the Eid-ul-Fitr and Christmas celebrations were on a low-key note. The market already facing a cash crunch due to the stock market crash took a beating. At that time it had not become so obvious that the growth of terrorism threatened to further slowdown India's march to becoming an economic power house in the world in 2009.

The 60-hour siege of India's financial and hospitality hub in Mumbai shook the nation as never before. The Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was right when he noted that the 26/11 terror attacks were aimed at the economic ambitions of India. The strikes were well coordinated as they also struck India's science, tourism and business hubs like Bangalore and Jaipur.

Whoever the enemy is the planning and methodology shows there is a method behind the madness of the Fidayeen attacks. These attacks are not being planned randomly by some local village leader sitting in Waziristan or running a terror camp for the point of Jihad. Behind these attacks is a think tank maybe even a nation who wishes to see India weak, divided, and its economy in ruins, a nation or an international economic cartel that feels threatened by the growth of the market for Indian goods and services abroad and wants to retain that market solely for itself.

The task therefore cut out for Indian intelligence agencies is stupendous. They will not only have to outthink this international monster but also ensure that they create the right international atmosphere for support to India in all its ventures.

For the Congress party the year 2009 is all the more important as India’s hopes lie inextricably linked with it, a party which has an international vision and can rise above petty regionalism and mafia raj, which is rampant in states ruled by regional parties like the BSP. Even the BJP has failed to rise above sectarian and caste politics.

Giving power to any other party in 2009 will amount to entrusting the fate of the hopeful millions of India into the hands of those who will not be able to steer the titanic Indian economy through the travails of 2009. They will simply strike the iceberg.
